Dallas Cowboys Retain Quarterback Trey Lance for 2024 Season

Dallas Cowboys Retain Quarterback Trey Lance for 2024 Season with $4.25 Million Bonus

Quarterback Trey Lance is gearing up to stay on board with the Dallas Cowboys for the 2024 season, backed by a hefty $4.25 million roster bonus, according to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. This boost in his compensation brings his total earnings for the upcoming season to a solid $5.31 million. Despite his sparse playing time, Dallas is sticking with Lance, highlighting his notable progress over the past year. However, they’ve decided against exercising his $22.4 million fifth-year option for 2025.

Drafted as the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lance has had limited opportunities, featuring in just eight games throughout his career so far. In the 2021 season, he made appearances in six games, tallying 603 passing yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. Unfortunately, his 2022 season was cut short after only two games due to an ankle injury, during which he managed 194 passing yards.

Now in the third year of his four-year, $34.1 million contract initially penned with the San Francisco 49ers in 2022, Lance found himself traded to the Cowboys ahead of the 2024 season, in exchange for a fourth-round pick. Despite ranking third in line behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush, Dallas seems optimistic about Lance’s potential to vie for the backup position next season.

As reported by Watkins, Cowboys’ head coach Mike McCarthy is aiming to uphold a trio of quarterbacks on the roster, with the third-string quarterback primarily serving in a developmental role—an opportunity that could align well with Lance’s aspirations to bounce back from his slow start in the league. Although uncertainties linger regarding his long-term prospects, Lance can find some stability as he gears up for the forthcoming season.
