Mexico Women’s Soccer Team Historic Win Over US in Women’s Gold Cup: Ends 80-Match Home Unbeaten Streak

Yesterday, February 26, 2024 – Mexico women soccer team wrote history with the only second win over US in the all 43 games they played.

In a stunning upset, Mexico emerged victorious with a commanding 2-0 triumph over the US in their Gold Cup encounter, securing the top spot in Group A.

This victory marks only the second time Mexico has prevailed against the U.S. out of 43 matches, with the U.S. dominating 40 of those contests.

Mexico showcased an impressive performance, highlighted by Lizbeth Ovalle’s memorable goal, which is bound to be etched in the annals of soccer history for years to come.

The official FIFA Women’s World Cup X posted that “An 𝙃𝙄𝙎𝙏𝙊𝙍𝙄𝘾 win for Mexico! 💚🤍❤️”

Mexico has become the first Concacaf team to defeat the US Women Soccer Team on American soil since Canada on November 11, 2000. The U.S., previously unbeaten in 80 consecutive home matches against Concacaf opposition (with 78 wins and 2 draws), saw their remarkable streak come to an end. This victory, coupled with Mexico’s impressive performance in the Gold Cup, cements their status as a force to be reckoned with in women’s soccer.

After the historic lost, in post game interview USWNT Sam Coffey said,

“We of course are going to feel this.. but I know we are going to wake up tomorrow and it’s going to be back to work.”
